Queensland Data Centres Council invites industry and stakeholder input for its response to the Australian Government’s Building AI infrastructure that works for Australia paper.
If your business is part of the digital economy, the Queensland Data Centres Council (QDCC) is preparing a submission for the Australian Government’s consideration as they design the standards and legislation on Building AI infrastructure that works for Australia. This consultation process is one of the most significant ever undertaken by a government – because if it’s done right, it can have a positive influence on our future and shape our success as a nation. The question is – how we can make sure it delivers benefits for us all – and not just the hyper-scalers and those with a vested interest in stopping development and limiting our jobs, wealth generation and economic growth.
The QDCC welcomes input from Queensland’s digital infrastructure sector, those businesses, workers and communities already involved in our digital economy – it’s your chance to contribute practical experience to the policies and framework before it’s too late – now’s the time to shape the best legislation for Australia’s critical AI and data centre infrastructure. Our focus is on Queensland’s competitive advantages, the requirements the sector needs to succeed, and the economic and community benefits that can flow from well-planned digital infrastructure investment.
Key issues for consultation
The consultation is considering a range of issues that will influence how large data centres and AI infrastructure are developed and operated in Australia. These include energy use and requirements, sustainable water use, community engagement and project locations, impacts on infrastructure and communities, workforce skills and training, and the thresholds used to determine which requirements should apply to different types of data centres.
For Queensland, this consultation is an opportunity to ensure these policies recognise the requirements of the digital economy and the broader economic and community benefits digital infrastructure support. Decisions around energy, water, location, infrastructure, workforce development and regulatory thresholds will influence where projects are viable, how investment is attracted and how effectively communities can participate in and benefit from growth. QDCC wants the real-life experience of the sector and its stakeholders to best inform government decision-making processes and ensure they have the best advice.
